American Cocker Spaniels

American Cocker Spaniels originated in the United Kingdom and then were brought to the United States and Canada in the late 1800s. This cute and versatile dog breed was used as field sports dogs, bird dogs and companion dogs. They used to flush out birds so that their masters could shoot them during hunt. Cocker Spaniels are very alert watch-dogs but they make poor guard-dogs as they are basically friendly to everyone.

American Cocker Spaniels have appealing dark eyes. Another their destinctive feature is their pendulous ears. These beautiful dogs have a double coat: the top coat is silky and medium length, and the under coat is dense. They have intense feathering on the ears, chest, belly and legs. American Cocker Spaniels have a thicker coat than English Cocker Spaniels. The coats come in many colors. Cocker Spaniels can be black, parti-colored, and with or without white markings on the chest and throat. American Cocker Spaniels have a sturdy, compact body and give an appearance of complete balance and ideal size. The dogs of this breed usually have a docked tail.

American Cocker Spaniels possess a lively and joyful temperament. They are always excited to be around people and are capable of adjusting to any setting, be it city, suburban or rural areas. Very intelligent, affectionate and trainable, American Cocker Spaniels make the most suitable pets for families with children. They also get along well with other pets in the household. American Cocker Spaniels do not respond well to rough or harsh training. These dogs should be trained with a gentle hand.

American Cocker Spaniels enjoy great popularity as pets. However, this popularity played a negative role too and led to a considerable amount of irresponsible breeding. Not only the temperament of the breed suffered which showed in aggressive behavior in some of the dogs, but also the dogs’ health. American Cocker Spaniels are excellent bird and small-game hunters, great companions, and perfect friends for a large family. Their appearance and nature leave no one indifferent. However American Cocker Spaniels will make a perfect pet only for a perfect owner, and it takes time and devotion to learn everything about this wonderful breed.
