American Cocker Spaniels - Dogs - Breed Description

American Cocker Spaniels are compact in size and sturdy in constitution. They have very long hairy ears, round and neatly chiseled head and fine coat, which feels soft and silky to the touch. The profile view reveals a noticeable stop. The muzzle is broad, and the lower jaw emphasizes the overall squared structure of the muzzle. The upper lip is long enough to conceal the lower jaw. The teeth are strong, and they close in a scissors bite.

American Cocker Spaniels have round, slightly oval eyes and black or brown nose. The standard defines three color varieties: Black, which may imply Solid Black or Black with tan markings; Parti-color, which should feature white with some other color, including roan, and ASCOB, which stands for 'any color other than black'. A white spot on the chest or throat is permissible with 'ascobs'.

Coat can be of different length. Long-coated species feature feathering on the ears, abdomen and around legs, but not hide the Cocker Spaniel’s true lines and movement. Dogs with shorter coats are better suited for hunting, and they have less trouble getting through thickets.

These dogs are very brave, agile, lovely and laborious. They are never aggressive toward strangers, and they get on well with other pets in the house. Cocker Spaniels can be well suited for apartment life and for hunting, because they make excellent gun dogs. They are playful, merry and devoted, and they greet us with cheerful wagging of tail. Some Cocker Spaniels like to bark.
