The well being, ease of handling, health and behavior of American Cocker Spaniel is strongly related to the skills and responsibility of the breeder you buy your pups from. Actually, there are two types of breeders - responsible and irresponsible, or in other words, professional and non-professional.
It is absolutely imperative that you learn as much as possible about the American Cocker Spaniel breed itself and the breeder and thus be absolutely aware of what you should or should not do, and where you should or should not go. First, do not buy American Cocker Spaniel puppies at pet stores or from dollar-oriented backyard breeders.
Here are several tips, which can help you in distinguishing between responsible and irresponsible breeders to help you choose a conscientious and dedicated breeder:
- Responsible American Cocker Spaniel breeders never involve species with serious genetic problems in their breeding programs. All their dogs have vet certificates, which prove their suitability for projects.
- Qualified breeders are professionally concerned about the proper temperament and behavior of future generations, and therefore they exclude misbehaving and vicious species from their programs. Timid and reserved dogs should not be included in projects either.
- Good breeders study the genetic condition of the breed on a global scale, contacting other reputable breeders and clubs and making detailed summaries on various tendencies, both desirable and undesirable, and thereafter taking professional and scientific steps towards boosting positive development and suppressing negative tendencies of the breed.
- Respectable breeders never involve 'brokers' for promoting and selling their puppies; nor do they advertise their puppies through mass media. They only sell from their homes, and they never trade in more than one or two breeds.
- Reputable breeders never sell their puppies to unqualified or irresponsible buyers. What they are after is keeping the breed's condition up to the mark, and therefore they scan their potential buyers by asking them questions about the breed, their attitudes and opinions, families, and children. They also visit their homes in order to make sure their puppies are going to the right and safe place.
- Responsible American Cocker Spaniel breeders put their dogs for various shows, and they have all necessary documentation, which includes show results, vet certificates, maybe pet insurance policy, vaccination accounts and so forth. American Cocker Spaniels can be susceptible to many health problems, and true breeders are never shy about telling buyers about the breed's downfalls or common disadvantages.
